SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 Exam Pattern: The Big Change This Year

The SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 examination begins today, 30 September 2026, and will continue till 30 October 2026 in computer-based (CBT) mode across the country. Over 30 lakh candidates are competing for 10,731 Group B and Group C posts — note that SSC revised the vacancy count on 24 September 2026, down from the 12,256 announced in the 21 May notification.

The single biggest change this year: fixed 15-minute sectional timing. Each of the four sections now has its own locked 15-minute window. When a section's time ends, the exam auto-moves you to the next section — you cannot go back, and unused minutes do not carry over. Your entire preparation strategy must be rebuilt around this rule.

• Negative marking: 0.50 marks deducted for every wrong answer.
• Medium: English & Hindi (except the English Comprehension section).
• Qualifying nature: Tier 1 is now completely qualifying — its marks do not count in the final merit. But you must clear the cut-off to reach Tier 2, so there is no room for a casual attempt.

What's New in SSC CGL 2026

1. Sectional timing in Tier 1 (and Tier 2): 15 minutes per section, locked. This is the first time SSC has introduced it in CGL Tier 1.
2. AAO posts are back: Assistant Audit Officer (Central & State Cadre) and Assistant Accounts Officer (State Cadre) return after being absent in CGL 2025, with pay scale Rs. 47,600–1,51,100 (Pay Level 8).
3. New Paper-III in Tier 2: General Studies – Finance & Economics, exclusively for AAO/Assistant Accounts Officer candidates. Tier 2 is expected in December 2026.
4. Local language rule for AAO State Cadre: selected candidates must be able to read, write, speak and understand the local language of the allotted state.
5. Statistical Investigator eligibility expanded: Data Science, AI and IT graduates are now eligible for Statistical Investigator Grade-II.

Section-Wise Strategy for the New Pattern

1. General Intelligence & Reasoning (15 min)

Attempt easy questions first — series, coding-decoding, odd-one-out. Do not spend more than 45 seconds on any single question in the first pass; marked questions can be revisited within the section's 15 minutes.

2. General Awareness (15 min)

This is the fastest section — either you know it or you don't. Attempt in 8–10 minutes and use the remaining time only for marked questions. Important: minutes saved here do NOT transfer to other sections, so don't rush blindly either.

3. Quantitative Aptitude (15 min)

The most time-pressured section. Pick your strongest topics first (simplification, percentage, ratio). Skip lengthy calculations immediately — one stuck question can eat 3 minutes you don't have.

4. English Comprehension (15 min)

Vocabulary and grammar questions are quick wins. Read comprehension passages once, carefully — re-reading is a luxury the 15-minute clock doesn't allow.

10 Last-Minute Tips

1. Practice with sectional mocks only — full 60-minute free-navigation mocks will now mislead you. Train each section in strict 15-minute blocks.
2. Fix your within-section order: the section order is fixed by the exam, but within each section attempt easy questions first and loop back to marked ones.
3. 45-second rule: if a question takes longer than 45 seconds on first attempt, mark it and move on.
4. Respect negative marking: with -0.50 per wrong answer, blind guesses in Quant can wipe out your GA gains. Guess only when you can eliminate at least two options.
5. GA is free marks: revise current affairs of the last 6 months, plus static GK (books, awards, sports, important days).
6. Formulas on fingertips: keep a one-page formula sheet for Quant and revise it daily — no derivations in the exam hall.
7. Use the last 2 minutes of each section for marked questions, not for starting new lengthy ones.
8. Sleep properly: a tired brain loses 10–15% speed, which matters more under sectional timing.
9. Exam-day documents: admit card, original photo ID, two passport photos. Reach the centre at least 60 minutes early.
10. Stay calm when the timer hits red: panic in one section must not spill into the next — each section is a fresh start.
